Apple Wallet and Google Wallet Loyalty Cards: How They Work for a Small Business
What a wallet loyalty card is, how a customer adds it with no app, how staff stamp it, what it costs, and what 11,000 real cards tell you about whether customers keep it.

An Apple Wallet loyalty card is a stamp card or points card that your business gives to each customer. It sits in the Wallet app on their iPhone, next to their bank cards and boarding passes. A Google Wallet loyalty card is the same thing on Android. The customer does not download an app. They scan a QR code, tap Add, and your card is on their phone. Every visit updates it.
This page is for the owner of a café, salon, restaurant or shop. It answers four questions: how it works, how to make one, what it costs, and whether customers really keep it.
How a wallet loyalty card works
- You design the card once. Your logo, your colours, your reward. For example: 8 stamps = a free coffee.
- You put a QR code at the counter. On the till, the door, or the receipt.
- The customer scans it with the phone camera. A short page opens. They type a name and number and tap Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet.
- The card is saved on the phone. iPhone puts it in Apple Wallet. Android puts it in Google Wallet.
- Staff scan the card at each visit. Any phone works. The new stamp shows on the customer's card in a few seconds.
- When the card is full, the customer gets a message on the lock screen: the reward is ready.
There is no special hardware. You do not need to connect it to your till.
Do customers really add it? Real numbers
This is the first worry every owner has. Here is what happened with cards issued by Revio merchants, up to October 2026:
| What we measured | Number |
|---|---|
| Loyalty cards issued | 11,000+ |
| Cards saved to a phone wallet | about 9,100 (8 in 10) |
| In Apple Wallet | about 6,100 |
| In Google Wallet | about 3,100 |
| Customers who came back on a second day within 30 days | 27% |
So the phone is not the problem. 8 in 10 customers keep the card on the first try. If a phone has no wallet, the card opens in the browser with the same QR code, and the customer still gets stamped.
The number to watch is the second one: about 1 in 4 customers come back on another day within a month. That second visit is where a habit starts. For more detail, see our loyalty benchmark.
How to make an Apple Wallet loyalty card
You have three options.
Option 1: Build it yourself
Apple and Google both publish the tools. For Apple Wallet you need an Apple Developer account, a pass certificate, a server that signs each card, and a web service that pushes updates. Google Wallet needs a Google Cloud project and its own API. This is a job for a developer. It takes weeks, and you also need to build the staff scanner and the customer list yourself.
Option 2: Use a card-copy app
Apps like Pass2U let a shopper copy a barcode into Wallet. These are for shoppers, not businesses. The card does not update, you cannot send messages, and you do not see who your customers are.
Option 3: Use a wallet loyalty platform
A platform does the certificates, the signing and the updates for you. You design the card in a browser, print the QR code, and start the same day. This is what most small businesses do. Revio is one of these. So are others, and our comparison page lists them.
What a wallet card can do besides stamps
- Lock-screen messages. "Your free coffee is ready" or "We miss you". No SMS cost.
- Live updates. Change the reward or the logo once, and every card on every phone changes.
- A link on the card. Your menu, your booking page, or your WhatsApp.
- A list of who stopped coming. See who has not visited in a while and send them a message.
- Apple and Google at the same time. One card design works on both. You do not build twice.
Wallet card vs paper card vs app
| Paper punch card | Your own app | Wallet loyalty card | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the customer does | Carries it | Downloads, makes an account | Scans, taps Add |
| Gets lost | Often | App gets deleted | Stays on the phone |
| You know who your customers are | No | Yes | Yes |
| You can message them | No | Yes, if they allow it | Yes, on the lock screen |
| Cost | Printing | Thousands to build | Small monthly plan |
Paper is cheap but silent. You never know who stopped coming. An app is powerful, but few customers download one for a single shop. A wallet card gives you most of the app with none of the download. We go deeper in Apple Wallet vs physical cards and a loyalty program without a customer app.
What it costs
Three parts:
- The platform. Revio starts at $25 a month, and you can stop any time. See pricing.
- The reward. A free coffee after 8 paid ones costs you one cup for 8 visits.
- Staff time. One scan. Faster than a paper stamp.
One extra visit a day usually pays for the plan in the first week. Want to check with your own numbers? Try the loyalty ROI calculator.
Who it works best for
Any business where customers come back:
- Coffee shops: frequent visits, stamps fit best.
- Salons and barbers: longer gaps, so reminders matter more than stamps.
- Restaurants: bills vary, so points are fairer.
- Bakeries, juice bars, car washes, gyms and local shops.
Want to see one before you decide? Make a free stamp card and put it on your own phone, or book a short call and we will set it up with you.
FAQ
Can a small business put a loyalty card in Apple Wallet?
Yes. You need either a developer to build it with Apple's pass tools, or a wallet loyalty platform that does it for you. With a platform you can be live the same day.
Do customers need to download an app?
No. Apple Wallet comes with every iPhone, and Google Wallet comes with most Android phones. The customer scans a QR code and taps Add.
Do customers actually keep the card?
Most do. Of 11,000+ cards issued by Revio merchants, about 9,100 were saved to a phone wallet. That is 8 in 10.
Does it work on Android?
Yes. The same card goes into Google Wallet on Android. Among Revio cards, about 3,100 live in Google Wallet and about 6,100 in Apple Wallet.
How do staff stamp the card?
They open a scanner page on any phone and scan the code on the customer's card. The stamp appears on the card in a few seconds. No special device.
What if the customer's phone has no wallet?
The card opens in the phone's browser with the same QR code. The customer still collects stamps.
How much does an Apple Wallet loyalty card cost?
Building it yourself costs a developer's time plus an Apple Developer account. A platform like Revio starts at $25 a month and includes Google Wallet, the staff scanner and messages.
